Batelco launches Voice SMS 'Samm3ni' service

Batelco now allows its Postpaid and Prepaid customers to send and receive voice SMS (Short Message Service).

The new Voice SMS 'Samm3ni' service allows customers to share Eid greetings, birthday wishes, or funny jokes with family and loved ones by recording their own voice and sending it as a message.

So far, Batelco is the only telecom operator in the Kingdom to offer this revolutionary service. On this occasion, Batelco is offering its customers the first voice greeting to be sent for free.

'Batelco is committed to providing customers with the most ground-breaking and up-to-date services. Regular SMS is a highly efficient way of communicating with others. However, with Batelco's new voice SMS, customers can convey a wider range of emotions, tone and attitude,'

said Batelco General Manager Media & Government Relations Ahmed Al Janahi.

To send a voice SMS, simply dial *11*, followed by the number of the person receiving the intended message. After sending the voice SMS, the other party will be notified through an SMS. They are then required to dial *10* to access the voice SMS. To access the main menu, they are required to dial *12*.

Sending an SMS through Batelco's 'Samm3ni' service costs the same as a normal one minute phone call, with charges varying based on the subscribers package. Listening to the voice SMS by dialing *10* is free of charge. Presently, Batelco only offers the voice SMS through its mobile network.

Key contracts in place and work underway for inaugural Bahrain International Airshow

Organisers of the inaugural Bahrain International Airshow (BIAS), Civil Aviation Affairs (CAA) for the Kingdom of Bahrain and partners, UK airshow organiser Farnborough International Ltd (FIL), have announced that key contracts have been awarded and work on the airshow site at Sakhir in Bahrain is well underway.

Some 200 tonnes of steelworks have recently arrived at the airshow site prior to which, 600,000 cubic metres of earth was excavated, 425,000 cubic metres of which was rock which has now been crushed and is being put to use as fill elsewhere on the site.

ArenaLea was confirmed in July 2009 as having won the contract for chalet structures and interiors for the show and workers and management are now installed in their on-site base at Sakhir.

Under a contract worth £17m, ArenaLea will undertake three events occurring on a biennial basis, the first of which, BIAS 2010, will take place 21-23 January 2010.

Following a recent planning visit to the site, FIL Exhibitions & Events Director Amanda Stainer, commented:

'Work is coming on extremely well at the site. One of the ways in which we plan to keep participants informed as to how the build is progressing is to install a time-lapse camera, which will be able to be viewed via the website, so that interested parties can literally watch the show as it comes together. We are certain that this will be well received among show participants because through our contact with them, we know that they are as excited about this inaugural event as we are ourselves.'Read more

Bahrain implements new 'Long Range Identification and Tracking of Ships' system

The maritime industry in the Kingdom of Bahrain has achieved another milestone for the Arab world with its implementation of a new international maritime system for tracking and identifying ships.

Mr. Hassan Ali Al Majed, Director General, GOP.
The General Organisation of Sea Ports (GOP) has now completed implementing all the necessary requirements for the 'Long Range Identification and Tracking of Ships' System (LRIT), a system whose implementation is obligatory by all International Maritime Organization (IMO) member states.

Falling in line with its ambition to realise a leadership position in the international maritime community, the GOP has now completed the implementation of all LRIT requirements, well ahead of the IMO's September 31 deadline.

As part of its strategic plans, the GOP is looking to adhere to all of the 'International Convention of Safety of Life at Sea' requirements, to which Bahrain agreed to in 1985.

The LRIT system allows contracting governments to identify the location of their ships and enables them to track the vessels all over the world at any time. This system also allows the country to identify foreign ships that are approaching maritime boundaries or territorial waters.

Chalet sales soar ahead of inaugural Bahrain International Airshow

With still five months to go between now and the inaugural Bahrain International Airshow (BIAS) co-organiser, Farnborough International Limited (FIL), has announced sales amounting to 60% of space with commitment, pending final agreement, on the remaining 15 chalet units.

The airshow, which will take place under Royal patronage from 21-23 January 2010, will be significantly different to any other aerospace event in the Middle East by way of its highly exclusive design.

It is being organised by Civil Aviation Affairs (CAA) for the Kingdom of Bahrain alongside FIL and in contrast to other airshows, there will be no exhibition halls, just 40 participating companies each of whom will operate from a luxury five star chalet, fronted by its own equipment display area.

These companies alone will be afforded the exclusive one-on-one opportunities to meet with high level visiting delegations.

Most recent organisations to sign up to the event include Boeing, EADS, and SELEX Sistemi Integrati, a Finmeccanica company. These companies add to the existing prestigious participants already announced, amongst which are BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Sikorsky and the US department of Defence.

The Flying Display is also set to form a very exciting demonstration of capabilities with expected participation from the US Navy, flying one of their F-18 Super Hornets as well as a SH60 Seahawk. Also expected is the H92 from Sikorsky. BIAS sponsor, Gulf Air - the official carrier for the airshow - will present a daily flypast and the Bahraini Air Force hope to demonstrate the F5 fighter jet, Hawk and F-16 Fighting Falcon.
